Para kore (Zero Waste)

As part of our Te Reo lesson this week we learnt that we have to take care of Papatuanuku and our kura so we went out into the playground and collected up rubbish.  We made sure our playground was free from litter.

Jade's Duffy Certificate

Jade got a Duffy Certificate and a book for her performance with the senior Kapa Haka group for the Manaiakalani Group.  What courage you showed to perform with the older children, Jade! (You can see her performance on the school blog page under the heading Maori.)

Two New Duffy Books Each!

The children were very excited to be able to choose two new Duffy books to take home.  They sat and read their new books sharing them with their friends.  Thanks to The Duffy Books in Homes for such a wonderful gift.  The children certainly treasure their books.

Eye Checks

Having their eyes checked was another new experience for most of the children.  They looked at charts on the wall with letters on them, books with coloured circles with numbers, had lights shined in their eyes and wore funny glasses but they were needed for making sure they could all see very well.  Thanks to the University Of Auckland Optometry Clinic for testing the children's eyes.

Cross Country Running

Yesterday we finally had our annual cross country race.  It was rained off on Thursday so the children were ready to race.  In the year one boys race Najari came fourth and in the girls race Madison came second with Jade F fourth and Leigharna fifth but the children were all champions and kept running all the way around the muddy course.

"Yesterday we ran so fast because Mr Burt used the clappers to start our race.  We went around the field, through the gate, passed the horses and up to the finish line".  By Kohatu.

"At cross country we had a race on the field and it was muddy on top of the field.  We ran as fast as we could and we had so much fun.  All of the children sat down in a row behind a chair labelled year 1."  By Ryder

Learning is Fun

A visit to Harold in his special classroom has been a highlight of term 3 for Class 16.  Harold taught us about eating a variety of healthy food.  We have also been learning about money, trading and products and having fun learning by shopping.  We made smoothies, butter and whipped cream.  The best part was in the tasting afterwards. Class 16

A Leopard is Flying

A picture of a leopard that looked as it he was flying motivated the children's writing and drawing this week.  Some thought he was like a flying super hero with his paws spread out while others thought he was scary.  Here are some examples of their sentences.

Jade F wrote - "The leopard has lots of energy.  He is like superman.  He is hungry and he likes meat."

Kohatu thought -  "The super hero leopard is flying to get some food."

William wrote - "The super hero leopard is strong and brave and he is tough."

Tevita thought he was like a running machine - "The lean mean leopard machine is happy to run in the sun."

Kyzel wrote - "The scary leopard is running through the green grass in the sun."

Teejay thought the leopard might have a different reason to run as cats don't like having baths.  He wrote,  "The scared leopard is running away from having a bath."
